I know it can seem daunting sometimes when you are looking for talent for your team. It always feels like there is a shortage of skilled people looking and available to hire, but I assure you they are out there waiting to be found.
So, how can you actually find qualified candidates for your job openings? Well, first off, I know this could be hard to hear for those of you who work 60+ hour weeks running your bars and restaurants, but you gotta get out on the town!
Unfortunately for your exhaustion levels, events geared toward hospitality like cocktail competitions, brand-sponsored events, tastings, and things like that will be your prime events where many candidates can be found.
Also, we all know there are always a few places that are notorious industry hangouts. If you don’t want to go to big events, get your after-shift drink at the nearest industry bar and get to chatting. You’re bound to overhear someone needing a job or talking about how they want something more. The rest of it is up to you.Continuing with that train of thought about going to events, if you search Google or Facebook for brands on the market in your location, you might find an event happening close by.
Hospitality has been notoriously low-tech for far too long, so you can’t be as reliant upon a more tech-heavy, classic recruiter search for bartenders.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be learning how to use technology to your advantage. Now, some of you may hate this, but Facebook is going to be your new best friend in searching for bartenders. This industry is an incredibly tight knit network. All you need to do is check your friends and see who is commenting, and you’re guaranteed to find a bartender for their next opportunity.
You have to be able to market your job postings properly as well. Get creative and get marketable. Whether it’s a “We’re Hiring” sign in the window or a posting sent through LinkedIn, or Indeed.com, more and more people are responding to creative and easily accessible advertising. Your bartenders might not be using tech that often, but you’re going to have to dive in if just going to events isn’t enough. You have to change your outreach if you aren’t finding the people you need.
